The project proposes an extension connecting the Alvar Aalto Museum and the Museum of Central Finland, creating a seamless link between two cultural landmarks.
The extension aims to enhance accessibility, flexibility, and public engagement, allowing both museums to be used more dynamically. The design also integrates shared facilities and thoughtful outdoor spaces.
Concept: Linking Spaces and Experiences
The extension acts as a gateway between the two museums. It provides direct access to the Alvar Aalto Museum and enables shared use of facilities, including:
- The auditorium of the Museum of Central Finland
- The Alvar Aalto Museum cafeteria, ‘Café Alvar’
- Flexible meeting, working, and educational spaces
By connecting these resources, the project encourages collaboration between the two institutions and improves visitor experience.
Public Realm and Outdoor Design
Between the museums, a new outdoor area with terraces and water basins creates a lively and inviting space. This intermediate zone encourages visitors to pause, gather, and enjoy the surrounding architecture.
The design also links the museum campus to Ruusupuisto Square, using terraces to connect the cafés and museum entrances to the public realm. This expands the urban footprint of the museums while integrating them into the surrounding city context.
Architectural Approach
The extension is conceived as a light, adaptable structure. Its transparent and open design allows visitors to perceive both museums and the exterior spaces.
By combining functional connectivity with aesthetic quality, the proposal emphasizes versatility, public engagement, and landscape integration.
Project Goals
Strengthen the connection to Ruusupuisto Square and surrounding urban fabric
Improve accessibility between museums and the surrounding city
Enable shared use of facilities to maximize functionality
Create an inviting outdoor public space with terraces and water features
