Preston Youth Centre RIBA Competition

The Preston Youth Centre proposal responds to the monumental presence of Preston Bus Station, creating a new public space that allows the building to “breathe.”

The project envisions a Youth Zone that rises vertically, respecting the scale and length of the station while providing a dynamic and inviting facility for the community.

Concept: Vertical Response to a Monument

Preston Bus Station dominates the streetscape, and no new structure on the same horizontal plane could compete with its mass. The Youth Zone rises upward, creating a visible and engaging presence without overwhelming the esplanade.

The new public esplanade provides a calm and inviting front to the station. It encourages interaction while highlighting the architectural significance of the historic bus station.

Architectural Approach

The design emphasizes verticality and subtlety, allowing the Youth Centre to coexist with the station’s monumental scale.

The building’s form and orientation:

  • Avoid competing with the bus station’s length or mass
  • Engage passersby with a quietly inviting façade
  • Support community activity while respecting the historic context

Project Goals

  • Restore the monumental presence of Preston Bus Station
  • Provide a public esplanade and community-facing entrance
  • Deliver a Youth Zone that is vertical, dynamic, and respectful of the surroundings
  • Encourage public interaction and community use
