This project involved the complete renovation of a Listed townhouse on Pittville Street in Portobello, Edinburgh.
The house had not been substantially updated for over 50 years, presenting both technical and conservation challenges.
The aim was to reimagine the internal layout to suit the needs of a contemporary family, while carefully preserving and enhancing the building’s historic character.
Design Approach
The renovation focused on opening up key spaces, introducing new bathrooms, and reconfiguring the plan to improve flow, daylight, and everyday usability.
All interventions were conceived as careful and respectful changes, balancing modern living requirements with the architectural integrity of the listed building.
Craftsmanship and Heritage
A central part of the project was close collaboration with specialist craftspeople, ensuring that historic elements were repaired, reinstated, or reinterpreted with care.
Accordingly, works included:
- Rebuilding and repairing historic stone walls with stonemasons
- Collaboration with historic window makers, incorporating sympathetic double glazing
- Refabrication of original cornices and fireplaces
- Bespoke joinery and cabinetry crafted to suit the period character
Furthermore, these interventions allowed the house’s original detailing to be preserved while improving comfort and performance.
Outcome
The renovation has restored the house to a renewed sense of grandeur, bringing together historic craftsmanship and contemporary family living. The result is a home that feels both rooted in its past and fully adapted for modern use.
