The Michael Woods Sports & Leisure Centre is a landmark public building in Glenrothes, Fife. Completed in June 2013, the £19 million new-build project was designed in collaboration with cre8architecture & b3 Architects.
Set within a dramatic landscape, the building draws inspiration from the surrounding rock formations. Its sculptural form gives the centre a strong civic presence while rooting it firmly in its natural context.

Context & Vision
The project aimed to redefine what a local authority sports and leisure centre could be. Rather than creating a purely functional facility, the design sought to deliver an inspiring public space that encourages wellbeing, activity, and social interaction.
The centre serves both local communities and regional users. It also supports national-level sporting activity, placing Glenrothes on the map as a destination for sport and fitness.
Architectural Approach
The architecture responds directly to the site. Strong, faceted forms echo the nearby geology and create a robust yet dynamic identity. Carefully controlled openings bring daylight deep into the building while framing views of the surrounding landscape.
Internally, the layout prioritises clarity and ease of movement. Public areas connect visually, allowing users to orient themselves quickly and move comfortably between activities.
Facilities & Programme
The centre offers an extensive range of indoor and outdoor facilities. These include:
- Three swimming pools
- An 85-station gym
- Fitness and exercise studios
- Squash courts
- A multi-purpose sports hall
- Meeting and community spaces
- Café and social areas
- Outdoor pitches and an athletics track
This broad programme allows the building to operate throughout the day and serve users of all ages and abilities.
Public Impact
As a civic building, the Michael Woods Sports & Leisure Centreplays a vital role in community life. It supports health and wellbeing. It encourages social connection. Equally, the building provides inclusive access to high-quality sports facilities within a public setting.
The project demonstrates how well-designed public architecture can elevate everyday experiences and foster pride in place.
Recognition
The Michael Woods Sports & Leisure Centre Glenrothes received a Highly Commended Award for Architectural Excellence at the Scottish Property Awards. Moreover, this recognition highlights both the quality of the design and its contribution to the built environment.
Outcome
Finally, the centre acts as a civic landmark for Glenrothes. It combines ambition, accessibility, and architectural clarity. The project continues to serve as a benchmark for local authority leisure buildings across the UK.
