Cafe NORD, Paris

Cafe NORD is a new café project developed in Paris for giles & george. The café occupies the ground level of an historic residential building, where generous proportions and original architectural features set the tone for the interior

The project balances respect for the existing fabric with a contemporary approach to hospitality design. The aim is to create a welcoming and characterful place that feels rooted in its context while clearly belonging to the present.

Design Approach

The café benefits from a spacious plan, high ceilings, and large windows that flood the interior with natural light. Rather than masking these qualities, the design frames and enhances them.

Contemporary elements sit alongside Haussmannian details in a deliberate and measured contrast. Clean lines and modern finishes sharpen the spatial clarity, while the existing structure provides depth and richness.

Interior Atmosphere

Green tones form the backbone of the interior palette. These colours soften the historic architecture and introduce a sense of calm within the bustling urban setting. Abundant planting reinforces this atmosphere, bringing nature into the heart of the café.

Plants also act as a visual counterpoint to the weight and formality of the historic envelope. As a result, the interior feels both grounded and fresh.

Materials & Light

Material choices prioritise durability and tactility. Finishes respond to the scale of the space while supporting everyday use. Natural light plays a key role throughout the day, animating textures and enhancing the café’s welcoming character.

Lighting design complements daylight rather than competing with it, ensuring a comfortable ambience from morning through evening.

Outcome

Cafe NORD offers a relaxed and contemporary café experience within a historic Parisian setting. By carefully balancing old and new, the project creates a space that feels familiar yet distinct.

Ultimately, the café demonstrates how sensitive interior design can enrich heritage buildings while supporting modern uses and social life.
