Grade A listed building apartment renovation and transformation. Biomorphis carried out internal alterations to a flat on Great King Street, located within a Category A listed building.
The project reimagines the flat’s layout to meet the evolving needs of a new family while respecting the building’s historic character and protected status.

Design Approach
The alterations focus on maximising space, functionality, and light while retaining the flat’s architectural integrity. By carefully reconfiguring the internal plan, we created new rooms, a modern kitchen, and updated bathrooms that improve flow, circulation, and everyday usability.

We approached each intervention as a balance between heritage and contemporary living, ensuring that new elements harmonise with existing finishes, detailing, and proportions.

Interior Reconfiguration
The design revisits the flat’s internal organisation to:
- Form functional new rooms tailored to the family’s lifestyle
- Introduce a modern kitchen integrated with existing circulation and character
- Upgrade bathrooms to combine comfort, efficiency, and elegance
Every alteration was tested using architectural visualisation, enabling the family to experience proposed changes virtually and refine layouts before construction.

Outcome
The Grade A Listed apartment renovation and transformation demonstrate how thoughtful internal design in a listed building can adapt historic spaces to contemporary life. The reconfigured flat delivers a practical, family-friendly home while maintaining respect for architectural heritage. By combining technical precision, spatial optimisation, and design sensitivity, the project shows how a historic Edinburgh apartment can evolve gracefully to meet modern needs.
Careful attention to natural light, circulation, and material integration enhances the spatial quality, creating rooms that feel both functional and inviting. Every new element, from the kitchen to the bathrooms, harmonises with existing architectural features, ensuring continuity of character while introducing modern comforts. The result is a home that balances heritage preservation with contemporary living, providing the family with a flexible, elegant, and enduring space for daily life.
