Biomorphis carried out a series of internal alterations to a flat on Stanley Road in Trinity, Edinburgh, located within a B Listed Building. The project reconfigured the existing layout to create a new kitchen–living space, an additional bedroom, and two ensuite bathrooms, all within the original footprint of the apartment.
The client required a practical transformation on a limited budget. Rather than seeing this as a constraint, we treated it as a design opportunity. The project balances careful spatial planning, material reuse, and respect for the historic character of the building.

Design Approach
We focused on working intelligently within the existing envelope. Structural changes remained minimal, while spatial efficiency drove every design decision. By rethinking circulation and room proportions, we created a more fluid and functional layout without expanding the apartment.
At the heart of the redesign sits a new kitchen–living space. This area now acts as the social core of the home. It improves daylight penetration and supports everyday living, cooking, and entertaining. The additional bedroom and ensuite bathrooms integrate discreetly into the plan, maintaining privacy and comfort.
Because the building is listed, we adopted a sensitive and respectful approach. We carefully studied the original fabric and retained key elements wherever possible. New interventions remain legible yet understated, allowing old and new to coexist.

Material Strategy
The limited budget encouraged a resourceful material strategy. We introduced reclaimed flagstones to key areas of the flat, adding texture, durability, and character. These materials reinforce a sense of continuity with the building’s history.
During the works, we uncovered previously hidden features within the flat. Rather than concealing them again, we chose to celebrate them. Exposed elements now contribute to the apartment’s identity and enrich the interior atmosphere.
This approach reduced waste and aligned with our commitment to sustainable refurbishment. It also ensured that the design felt grounded and authentic.

Outcome
The Stanley Road project demonstrates how thoughtful internal alterations can transform a listed apartment without compromising its heritage. The redesigned layout delivers improved functionality, additional accommodation, and enhanced everyday comfort.
Through careful planning, material reuse, and design restraint, the flat now offers a warm, practical, and characterful home. The project highlights how architectural intelligence, rather than scale or budget, can unlock the true potential of existing buildings in Edinburgh.
