Loft conversion at Warriston, Edinburgh

Biomorphis is transforming a three-bedroom family home in Warriston, Edinburgh, by converting its loft into a functional studio with an ensuite bathroom.

The project adds a new stair, improving circulation and connecting the loft seamlessly with the lower floors. By activating unused attic space, the home gains valuable living accommodation without changing its footprint.

This conversion allows the family to enjoy additional space, privacy, and comfort, all while keeping the character of the original home intact.

Design Approach

We focused on light, functionality, and flow throughout the loft. The new stair sits in a carefully chosen position, creating a smooth transition between floors. Rooflights and carefully sized openings bring natural light deep into the space, making the loft feel bright and welcoming.

We used real-time walk-through visualisation to study multiple layouts. This approach helped the family understand how the studio would function and how the ensuite would fit. It also allowed us to refine proportions, storage, and circulation before finalising the design.

By treating the loft as an integrated part of the home, we ensured every detail contributes to overall cohesion. Materials, finishes, and furniture placement all align with the family’s lifestyle and the existing architectural character.

Spatial Transformation

The loft conversion transforms a previously underused area into a flexible, multi-functional living space. The studio serves as a private retreat, while the ensuite enhances convenience. Rooflights and carefully positioned windows create connections with the sky and surrounding environment, enriching the home experience.

Meanwhile, the lower floors benefit from improved circulation. Every adjustment enhances flow, daylight penetration, and usability, resulting in a more cohesive home overall.

Outcome

Even in progress, the project demonstrates how strategic loft conversions can unlock hidden potential in urban homes. The new studio and ensuite provide functional, light-filled spaces that meet modern family needs.

By combining spatial intelligence, client collaboration, and design precision, we turned a simple attic into a comfortable, elegant, and practical extension of the home. The project shows that even small attic spaces can deliver high-quality living areas without compromising the building’s character.
