House alterations in Portobello, Edinburgh

House alterations in Portobello Edinburgh. Biomorphis redesigned the ground floor of a family home in Portobello, Edinburgh, to create a flexible kitchen-living space and a new bedroom.

The previous layout placed the kitchen in a self-contained space on the opposite side of the house. We converted that kitchen into a bedroom, giving the family a more functional, connected layout.

The project focuses on enhancing daily life, improving circulation, and making the home more adaptable to changing family needs.

Design Approach

We prioritised flexibility, light, and connectivity. By relocating the kitchen and creating an open-plan layout, the ground floor now feels spacious and welcoming. The new configuration allows the family to interact more freely while cooking, dining, or relaxing.

We carefully considered traffic flow and ergonomics. Each room aligns with the family’s lifestyle, ensuring the space functions efficiently for daily routines. Large openings and thoughtful positioning of furniture and appliances create a cohesive environment where natural light penetrates deeply into the interior.

We also employed real-time visualisation tools to test layouts, materials, and lighting. This allowed the family to experience the space virtually, explore multiple options, and refine details before construction began.
