Flat alterations on Glen Street, Edinburgh

This tenement flat presented a familiar challenge: a central kitchen that disrupted the flow and limited the sense of space. Our approach was to rethink the plan entirely.

By relocating the kitchen to the front of the flat, we were able to form a generous open-plan kitchen and living space, allowing light and views to connect across the flat.

The reconfigured plan unlocks a greater sense of volume and flexibility, with the kitchen now acting as the social heart of the home. The former kitchen area was carefully repurposed to create a dedicated home office, an essential element of contemporary living that adds both functionality and character.

Sustainability guided the approach: we worked with the existing structure wherever possible, reusing and adapting rather than replacing. This light-touch strategy not only reduced waste but also ensured that the new layout will serve the flat well into the future, adaptable to changing patterns of living.

Through a considered balance of proportions, circulation, and natural light, the flat now offers spaces that feel more generous, adaptable, and attuned to the way we live today, while respecting the fabric and spirit of the tenement.
