This tenement flat presented a familiar challenge: a central kitchen that disrupted the flow and limited the sense of space. Our approach was to rethink the plan entirely.
Reimagining a Traditional Tenement Layout
By relocating the kitchen to the rear, we were able to form a generous open-plan kitchen and living space, allowing light and views to connect across the flat.

Working with the Existing Fabric
Sustainability guided the approach: we worked with the existing structure wherever possible, reusing and adapting rather than replacing. This light-touch strategy not only reduced waste but also ensured that the new layout will serve the flat well into the future, adaptable to changing patterns of living.

Light, Proportion and Flow
Through a considered balance of proportions, circulation, and natural light, the flat now offers spaces that feel more generous, adaptable, and attuned to the way we live today. The careful alignment of openings and surfaces enhances daylight and visual continuity, creating a calm and cohesive atmosphere.
Sustainability and Long-Term Adaptability
By retaining much of the original fabric and minimising invasive construction, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can achieve significant transformation with a modest environmental impact. This approach reflects a commitment to sustainability, affordability, and the enduring value of well-proportioned space.
Respecting the Spirit of the Tenement
The result is a home that feels both contemporary and respectful of its origins. The Glen Street flat alteration illustrates how intelligent planning and subtle interventions can revitalise Edinburgh’s historic tenements — unlocking hidden potential and enhancing everyday living without compromising their character.
